Hi, it's your vocal coach Melissiah here and before I answer your questions you probably want to know a little more about me... So here goes. I'm an international performer, recording artist, session musician and voice specialist.

Oh and I also have a Grad Dip in Music from La Trobe University, an Associate in Voice from Trinity College London and I'm just completing my Cert IV in Workplace Assessment and Training.

Q: Is it true that your vocal cords have to 'zip up' to sing correctly?

A: This is a myth. Your vocal cords - more correctly called your vocal folds - do not resemble a zip or work in any way like a zipper when you sing. It's scary to think that there are so many bad voice teachers out there perpetuating such misinformation.

Basically, when your vocal folds adduct or close together and air is passed through them they vibrate to produce sound. Q: Will your program teach me how to sing with the diaphragm?

A: I am asked this question frequently from students who've previously been told by a teacher to 'sing with the diaphragm'. What these teachers don't seem to understand is that muscles only work one way.

Your diaphragm - a large sheet of muscle that separates your thorax from your abdomen - contracts when you breathe in and actually relaxes when you breathe out or sing.

Q: Is it true that you don't need to worry about breathing or breathing technique if you keep your larynx stable or in a speech position when you sing?

A: This is another myth. Your laryngeal mechanism which is responsible for phonation, is ennervated by different nerves from your breathing mechanism which is responsible for expiration. A stable larynx therefore does not guarantee that a singer is using their breathing mechanism efficiently.

Remember that your singing instrument is your entire body, not just your larynx.

Q: I heard from another singing teacher that visual imagery shouldn't be used to teach people singing. How will this affect me as I have been told I am a visual learner.

A: In the last two decades our knowledge about how people learn has expanded rapidly. We now know that a person's senses actually take in and store 400 billion bits of information every second and that the best learning takes place when information is presented via a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic means.

As we learn more effectvely when learning is linked to novelty and/or humour, the use of visual imagery is extremely useful in certain learning situations. For example if you sing a love song, it makes sense to imagine someone or something that you love (eg your kitten, your car or even your favourite dessert) so that you genuinely portray this emotion in your voice and body language.

If you excell at processing information visually you'll find the Absolute Singing Mastery book a quick and eye-opening read, but remember that being a singer involves a high degree of auditory and kinesthetic acuity. The CDs in the program will help you improve your skill in this area.

Q: When I auditioned for choir many years ago, I was told that I didn't have a voice so I'm skeptical about the claims of your program that anyone can have a good voice.

A: Let me ask you a question - are you skeptical about being skeptical? Because if you are, it's possible that you might be able to unlearn the limiting beliefs that have been imposed on you by someone else.

Q: I'm very embarrassed that I can't sing in key. Will this program help?

Q: I've read a lot about how to be a good singer on the internet so why should I invest in your program?
